Many years ago, avocados were believed to be ‘unhealthy’ due to their high fat content. Thankfully, today we know they are indeed packed with important healthy fats and are even called a superfood. This is enough reason to make them part of our meals on a regular basis, especially when they are in season.
Heleen Meyer has four top tips when it comes to avocados …
🥑 1. Only use a sharp, smooth-bladed knife when cutting an avocado. A serrated knife will bruise the avo, causing it to turn brown much faster.
🥑 2. Rinse the part of the freshly cut avo that you are not using immediately, under cold water. This keeps the avocado you want to use later, from browning quickly.
🥑 3. Avos are packed with health benefits. They’re high in vitamins and minerals, fibre, antioxidants, and have anti-inflammatory properties. Did you know that an avocado is naturally cholesterol-free? Avos are also packed with healthy fats, which make you feel fuller for longer and are good for our hearts, brains and gut health.
🥑 4. Avos are so versatile that you can truly add it to any meal of the day, from breakfast to a snack, lunch, salads, salsas and as part of dinner.
Removing an avocado pip in five easy steps:
🥑 1. Cut the avocado in half with a sharp, smooth-bladed knife, following the shape of the fruit, from the top to the base, all around the pip.
🥑 2. Twist the two halves in opposite directions, to separate them.
🥑 3. Hold the half with the pip in the palm of your hand and using a sharp knife, carefully ‘whack’ the blade into the pip.
🥑 4. Twist the knife in one direction, while turning the avo half in the opposite direction, to loosen and then lift the knife to remove the pip from the flesh.
🥑 5. DO NOT remove the pip from the knife with your hand! Gently tap the blade of the knife over a bin or sturdy bowl to remove it safely.
