Remembering, Reminding and Reminiscing on the days of National service, as well as actual days of combat service

In late 2025 Matt had an idea for another show. Many will remember the radio shows that were aimed at troops serving in the old South African
Defence Force. Patt Kerr did ‘Forces Favourites’ on the SABC English Service. Esmé Euvrard presented ‘Springbok Rendezvous’ on Springbok
Radio, and Marie van Zyl ‘Stand at ease/Op die plek rus’ on Radio Five.
All of these shows had one thing in common – they were aimed at people serving in the SADF.
Members serving in uniform could send a letter through to one of these shows with a dedication (usually to their sweetheart) and a request for a song to be played.
Likewise, parents or girlfriends could send a letter sending a dedication through to their boyfriend/husband/son/brother.

Matt realised that there was potential to revive a show based on these lines. Something that would bring back memories for those once did time in uniform.

Fall In/Tree Aan was started every Saturday from 12.00 to 14.00. It would be hosted by Matt, along with fellow military veteran Jeff Marcus.

“We had no idea of how popular the show would become, nor how quickly,” says Matt. “We play music ranging from 1968 to 1992. This was the era when military service was compulsory in South Africa.
Most of the music we play are requests sent in by the listeners.”

Currently the show has listeners in South Africa, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and Israel.

Matt and Jeff have been invited to do a live broadcast of the show at events in Pretoria and Oudtshoorn later in the year.

Saturdays show is Midday to 2pm and Wednesdays 7pm to 10pm both are live and open to requests.

“My main aim is to grow the listernership. Not only for LOBY and Fall In/Tree Aan, but for Radio Today,”
says Matt. “We want people to listen to our shows, but we want to keep them tuned to Radio Today afterwards.
