Kate Mosse, internationally celebrated author of books that have sold five million copies in 42 languages, launches her final novel in ‘The Joubert Family Chronicles’ next week in SA.  Sue Grant-Marshall was given the first interview with Mosse about  ‘The Map of Bones’ ( Pan Macmillan) which is set in southern Africa in 1688 and 1862 – in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. The author told Sue that it is a love letter, ‘ to the power of women’s writing, to the connections between generations, and the courage of those who were explorers in new, unknown, lands.’

‘This book is a thriller, with romance, cruelty, slaves, triumph and adventure woven into riveting words,’ says Sue. ‘If you have read the other three Joubert family chronicles, then this is a must. If not, ‘Bones’ is a great stand-alone novel,’ says Sue.

Sue also reviewed ‘Kirstenbosch’ by Brian J Huntley (Penguin Random House / Struik Nature), ‘ which travels back into its rich floral history, with exquisite glossy, colour pictures. A coffee table book that is reasonably priced at R400, it’s a tremendous festive gift,’ says Sue.

She chatted about ‘ Ghosts of the British Museum’ by Noah Angell (Jonathan Ball/ Octopus). It’s a true story of colonial loot and restless human remains. Angell interviewed staff, old and new, who told him of their manifold, supernatural encounters. He writes, ‘ it now appears that the objects are fighting back.’

Even sceptics will find this fascinating.
