Roan Antelope .Â
A very large antelope standing on average 1.43 m at the shoulder and having a mass of up to 272 kg . Both sexes have scimitar – like horns and very long ears.Â
Â
Their habitat has very specific requirements that being open savanna with large stretches of tall grass and sufficient water. They are sensitive to any change in habitat such as bush encroachment and over utilisation of grass. They avoid areas with short grass and woodlands with a roof of foliage. They sometimes eat leaves but mostly feed on grass from 2 – 8 cm high, grazing takes place mainly in early mornings or afternoonsÂ
Â
Bachelor herds , solitary males and breeding herds of between 5 and 25 animals per herd exist. The breeding herds have a dominant male and female as leader and will leave their home range when food and water becomes scarce .The dominant male shows territorial behaviour by defending his females for 300 – 500 m around the herd but not in a specificÂ
area . Young males of 5 – 6 years leave the bachelor herd and go solitary.
Vocalising is something between a snort and a hissing sound. A single young is born anytime during the year after a gestation period of 9 months with a life span of average 19 years .
Next week we look at the Sable Antelope.
